Antiquus Astrology
       The last and final Dignity of the Planets is that of Face. A Face, or Decan is a 10° division of each of the Signs. Each Sign being made up of 30° has 3 Decans or Faces. Each Face also has a specific meaning which will not be related here due to its length (being as there are 36 decans in total and 7 Planets being placed in each of these decans would make it quite lengthy). The purpose as to why these Decans are called Faces is because they show the nature and inclination of the Planets in them as if they were in their own House.

       The scale of the Faces is quite simple as it goes through a descending order. The first Face or Aries starts with Mars which is followed by the Sun, who is under Mars, and then Venus, who is under the same. The first Face of Taurus takes over from where the third Face of Aires left off, that being Mercury, and the second Face of Taurus being Luna, and the last or third Face of Taurus going back to the top of the Traditional Planetary order and starting at Saturn. Thus the first face of Gemini is Jupiter, following the last Face of Taurus, followed again by Mars as the second Face and Sol as the third. This progressive order goes through the entire Faces of each sign. Further note that every two signs after its placement each Planet moves across to the next Face. For example, Mars is found in the first Face of Aries, two signs down from Aries, we see that Mars is in the second Face of Gemini, and down two more signs, we see that Mars is in the third Face of Leo.

       In order to use the judgments of the Faces or Decans you must look to see which Face that the Ascendant (or any cusp, specifically angles) is in and then judge the Native to have the inclination of that. For example, the Ascendant being in the first Face of Aries makes the Native bold, strong, & confident, and thus judge of the other Faces and Angles (it being the 7th would give the Natives public enemies or spouse this quality). This is further confirmed if the Lord of the Ascendant, Moon or any Planet beholding the Ascendant is found in the same Face or a Face of the same Nature.

       The Face only has a dignity rating of 1 (+1) and is therefore a minor dignity when judging how powerful a Planet is. Faces are however, as aforementioned, powerful indicators of inclinations and should not be ignored because of their low dignity rating. Before closing I will include the Table of Faces for each of the Planets.

       Because of the brevity of the Face article I saw fit as well to add the Planetary Joys to this section as well because they are of importance. Although they do not have a dignity rating, they should always be considered, especially to understand how comfortably and joyous the Planet be in his placement. The Joy of Planets is only to be considered with regard to the Houses of each Planet. The Joys of the Planets follow thus;

Saturn                      -                Aquarius
Jupiter                     -                Sagittarius
Mars                        -                Scorpio
Sol                            -                Leo
Venus                      -                Taurus
Mercury                  -                Virgo
Luna                        -                Cancer

       The reason why Saturn finds Joy in Aquarius is because while he does have House in both Capricorn and Aquarius, he also has Triplicity in Aquarius and being a diurnal Planet, he finds Joy in this placement above Capricorn. Jupiter finds Joy in Sagittarius because it is both his House and Triplicity as well he is a diurnal Planet and Sagittarius is also diurnal and therefore he is most comfortable and happy. Mars finds Joy in Scorpio because, as the others, he has both House and Triplicity in this placement and Mars and Scorpio being Nocturnal, he finds his Joy. All the rest of the Planets follow the same course except for Sol & Luna who naturally have Joy in their own Houses. And these are the Joys of the Planets and thus concluding the section on the Dignities of the Planets.
