The fourth House is called the North Angle because it is directly North in the Heavens. It is the most stable Angle and therefore related to the Earth and foundations. It rules over things that are fixed and immovable goods, which includes houses, farming & tillage, estates. It has signification over age and has a very Saturnine temperament to its signification. It has also signification over fathers and their estates and inheritances gained through fathers.
All significations concerning houses should be found here. It is often mentioned that this angle represents the "home" but I believe that many modern interpretations have been based off this signification of houses which are completely different. A house is a fixed body that is created and meant to last whereas a home is a body which is held together not with wood and nails but with family love. There are very few (if any) traditional authors who judge the state of the home from this House. Many malevolent influences in this House or afflicting its Lord can create an unstable House, something of danger to the Native (especially of destruction by fires). This House and his Lord also shows the profitability of selling Houses and whether the Native will benefit or lose with regards to the sale of his House or others. The Lord of the 4th House placed in the 10th House can illustrate a career in Housing development or sale.
This House also has signification over fathers, specifically inheritance gained through the father and his estate. Sometimes the significations of the 4th House and the 8th House blur at this point but it should be remembered that the 4th House can grant these significations even prior to the death of the father and are towards the fathers estate specifically. Any malevolent influences in or afflicting this House can lead to a destruction or waste of the fathers estate. To be able to see where this destruction comes from (whether the Native himself, the brothers, or even the father) look to which Planet is Lord of the House that is afflicting the 4th or his Lord. Benevolent placements in the 4th House can indicate a large estate being bestowed upon the Native.
Plants, gardening and husbandry (farming) are all ruled under this House. Whether the Native will have interest in this, or even follow under a successful venture concerning this trade is determined by this House and its positive aspects to the benevolents or the dignity of his Lord. In interpreting the strength of the Native in these trades, refer to the aforesaid statement concerning the sale of Houses. This House can also show inheritance of land specifically or houses. The state of this land that is inherited (if it is to be interpreted) is also determined by the state of the 4th House and its Lord. If farming land is inherited or purchased, it is profitable to consider the Sign in which the cups of the 4th House lands. All fiery Signs denote a dry and barren land. The earthy Signs usually denote places of growing grains and other tillable lands, however Taurus is specific for the growing of Gardens and flowers. Concerning airy Signs, the lands tend to be high and mountainous, especially uneven. Of the airy, Libra is the most favorable for growing fruits and orchards. Watery Signs show a great deal of moisture in the lands, Pisces tends to give too much water but Scorpio is suitable for fruits and orchards.
Finally, the 4th House, being the lowest subterranean part of the Nativity it shows hidden treasures and things that are buried or hidden. Whether or not the Native will have success finding these treasures is, as aforesaid, determined by the state of the House and his Lord. If in a good state the Native is shown to be a finder of treasure or things buried and hidden, especially of age. A strong 4th House can indicate archeologists, specifically if there is some relation to the 10th House which rules over trade and profession. Since the 4th has signification of age, it also has rulership over the end of matters. Things which will come to an end soon will be shown in this House. As aforementioned, there are a lot of Saturnine qualities found in this House which should be kept in mind when attempting to analyze the significators.
General
It is called by the Latins Imum Cœli and its color is red. It rules over the breast, stomach and lungs of man and is cosignificators of the Cancer and Sun. It is a feminine House. It is sometimes called the Angle of the Earth and sometimes labeled the first cause of generation because earth was the first element used to create Adam.
Mundane
The 4th House has signification over Castles, cities and towns, and heritages, specifically if they are of age and ancient. Also signified are members of the society who are old, specifically old men. The state of the elderly in any Country can be determined by the state of the 4th House, cusp and Lord. If they are ill dignified, it signifies the aged members of the society are weak and frail, maybe even diseased if other significators support this. This House is also used for besiegement. If countries are at war it can be determined if the place of attack (being aged) will submit to invaders or the people of the area will overcome their oppressors and attackers. While of course this interpretation was initially used in order to determine the strength of Castles or strongholds, it can be extended as well to other modern invasions on fortified locations, specifically ones of age. A benevolent Lord of the 4th and aspects to the 4th House show the unlikeliness of attack in that town, city or location.
